A 5.5-magnitude earthquake struck eastern Afghanistan on Thursday, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS).
The earthquake hit the Jurm District at a depth of 216.7 kilometres. There were no immediate reports of casualties or damage.
The tremor comes less than a week after a 6.0-magnitude earthquake struck the Hindu Kush mountain region in northeastern Afghanistan on Saturday.
Afghanistan is one of the world’s most earthquake-prone countries due to its location along active tectonic fault lines, particularly in the Hindu Kush region, where seismic activity is frequent.
In August 2025, a powerful 6.0-magnitude earthquake struck the eastern provinces of Kunar and Nangarhar, killing around 2,205 people and injuring approximately 3,640 others.
The country’s northeastern region has also experienced numerous major earthquakes over the past century. Historical records show that since 1900, the area has been hit by at least 12 earthquakes measuring more than 7.0 in magnitude, underscoring its high seismic vulnerability.
