The National Citizen Party (NCP) has alleged that its motorcade came under attack in Golapganj of Sylhet on Thursday, just days after a similar incident in Habiganj.
The incident occurred around 2:30 pm on the road in front of the Golapganj Municipality gate at Chowmuhani, according to local reports.
Eyewitnesses and party sources said the attack took place as NCP leaders were leaving a meeting with families of those killed in the July movement at the Golapganj Upazila Auditorium as part of the party’s July March programme. They alleged that BNP activists suddenly attacked the motorcade.
At 2:42 pm, NCP Northern Region Chief Organiser Sarjis Alam claimed in a Facebook post that “BNP terrorists” had launched a “bloody attack” on the party’s vehicles in Golapganj and vandalised them.
However, Sylhet Superintendent of Police Dr Chowdhury Md Jaber Sadeq offered a different account.
“The vehicles were passing along the road when someone threw a brick from the roadside, breaking the window of Sarjis Alam’s vehicle. I would not describe it as an attack on the entire motorcade,” he said.
The police chief added that he had received no reports of any injuries in the incident.
