A fire was allegedly set to the family home of former Chattogram city mayor and Awami League leader ABM Mohiuddin Chowdhury at Chashma Hill in the port city on Thursday night.
Mohiuddin Chowdhury’s elder son, Mohibul Hasan Chowdhury Nowfel, served as education minister in the ousted Awami League government.
The Chashma Hill residence has been attacked and set on fire several times since the fall of the government on August 5, 2024, during the mass uprising.
Mohiuddin Chowdhury’s younger son, Borhanul Hasan Chowdhury Saleheen, alleged that a petrol bomb was thrown at the family home on Thursday night.
Saleheen raised the allegation in a Facebook post, saying, “Once again, an attack has taken place on the family residence of my late father, people’s leader ABM Mohiuddin Chowdhury. A petrol bomb was thrown at our home.”
He described the incident as an attack not only on a house but also on his family’s security, democratic values and the rule of law. He urged law enforcement agencies to conduct a prompt, impartial and transparent investigation and bring those responsible to justice.
The incident came a day after Nowfel attended a press conference by former prime minister Sheikh Hasina in New Delhi. Hasina, who is staying in India after being sentenced to death in a crimes against humanity case, joined the event virtually.
Former cricketer Shakib Al Hasan also joined the press conference virtually. His house in Magura was attacked and vandalised the same day.
Three photographs attached to Saleheen’s Facebook post showed several people gathered on the road in front of the Mohiuddin Chowdhury residence.
One person was seen standing on a boundary wall beside the sunshade of the second floor, while another photograph showed the same person walking back along the wall as a fire burned behind him.
Panchlaish Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mohammad Zahedul Islam told bdnews24.com that several people placed something on the sunshade and set it on fire.
“Part of the sunshade and a pipe were blackened in the incident. Local residents intervened, prompting the people to leave the area. Later, our patrol team also went there,” he said.
The OC said no family members were at the residence at the time and that only a few security personnel were present.
He said police had not yet obtained video footage of the incident and that a team would collect CCTV footage after Friday prayers.
