The United Arab Emirates said its air defense systems detected two ballistic missiles launched from Iran on Tuesday, August 18, amid renewed tensions in the Gulf region.
According to the UAE Defense Ministry, the missiles were assessed to have been targeting maritime traffic.
One missile fell within the UAE’s territorial waters, while the other fell outside them. Both ultimately landed in the sea, and no damage was reported.
UAE authorities briefly warned residents about a potential missile threat and urged them to move to safe locations.
The alert was later lifted, with officials saying the situation was safe and people could resume normal activities.
Iran, however, has denied launching the missiles. Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei rejected the UAE’s allegation as baseless, saying such accusations were contrary to good-neighborly relations and could undermine efforts to prevent further regional escalation.
The incident comes amid heightened tensions between Iran and the United States and growing concerns over maritime security in the strategically important Strait of Hormuz.
