US, Iran exchange strikes again

The United States and Iran have exchanged attacks again, raising fears of renewed military escalation in the Middle East after more than a month of relative calm.

The latest escalation began when the United States struck Iranian rocket launchers on Larak Island in the Strait of Hormuz.

Washington said the attack was aimed at preventing Iran from laying mines in the strategically important waterway.

In retaliation, Iran launched missiles and drones at two US military bases in Jordan. Iran also claimed it targeted US forces in the United Arab Emirates, although Abu Dhabi rejected the claim that Al Minhad Air Base had been attacked.

The UAE said it intercepted an Iranian drone over its territorial waters.

US President Donald Trump has threatened further strikes, saying Washington would “hit them hard” in response.

Meanwhile, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian called for dialogue, saying continued war was not in the interests of Iran or the region.

The renewed fighting has also pushed oil prices higher, with Brent crude rising above $90 a barrel amid concerns over disruptions to shipping and energy supplies through the Strait of Hormuz.
