US Vice President JD Vance has declined to provide a timeline for when the ongoing conflict with Iran will end, saying the matter depends largely on Tehran’s actions.
Speaking at a White House briefing on Thursday, Vance said he would not describe the situation as a “war,” arguing that there was currently no active exchange of fire.
However, the US and Iran have exchanged strikes in recent days, including around the strategically important Strait of Hormuz.
Vance said the United States would not engage in talks with Iran unless Tehran stops attacking commercial shipping.
Asked when the conflict would end, he said he did not know and suggested that the answer would have to come from the Iranians.
The Trump administration has focused on protecting commercial oil shipments through the Strait of Hormuz, while tensions have contributed to higher global oil prices.
