Police and sacked officials and employees of Islami Bank Bangladesh were involved in a chase and counter-chase near the Secretariat in Dhaka on Monday afternoon as the protesters marched to demand reinstatement.
As part of a pre-announced programme, the sacked employees held a brief rally in front of the National Press Club before setting off towards the Secretariat to submit a memorandum.
When the procession reached the Secretariat intersection, police stopped them. Police then charged with batons to disperse the protesters, triggering a chase and counter-chase.
Shahbagh Police Station Officer-in-Charge Moniruzzaman said police had taken control of the situation.
“When some aggressive protesters attacked the police, officers used force to bring the situation under control,” he said.
