DHAKA: Clashes, vandalism and arson broke out in the Mirpur-10 area of the capital on Wednesday morning during a drive to clear illegally occupied footpaths.
The incident began around 9:30am when a mobile court of Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) launched an eviction drive to remove illegal roadside shops and clear the footpaths. Police accompanied the city corporation team.
According to eyewitnesses, a group of roadside traders became agitated during the operation and attacked a city corporation vehicle. The vehicle was vandalised and later set on fire.
Around 11:45am, the traders were seen gathered in front of Mirpur Ideal College, while police took position around the Mirpur-10 roundabout.
Eyewitnesses said tensions continued as police fired tear-gas shells and the traders responded by throwing bricks and stones. The traders reportedly outnumbered the police, forcing officers to retreat amid the stone-pelting.
Several incidents of assault and vandalism were reported during the confrontation. A city corporation vehicle was set on fire, while police personnel and journalists were reportedly injured.
Tensions remained high in the area as of noon.
