Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed has said a lack of coordination between the magistrate in charge and police may have contributed to clashes with hawkers during an eviction drive in Mirpur, Dhaka, on Wednesday.

He made the remarks while responding to questions from reporters at the Secretariat about clashes between hawkers and police and the setting of vehicles on fire during the eviction operation. Reports said the unrest erupted as the Dhaka North City Corporation conducted a drive to clear footpaths and roads of illegal encroachments.

“Based on the preliminary information, it appears there was a lack of necessary coordination between the magistrate concerned and the police,” the minister said.

Salahuddin said he had learned that the magistrate responsible for the operation had not properly communicated with the police.

“There seems to have been a lack of coordination here. However, I have ordered an investigation into the matter,” he said.

Asked about concerns over the country’s overall law-and-order situation, the home minister said the government was working to ensure public safety and maintain social peace.

He said isolated incidents should not be used to assess the overall law-and-order situation in the country.

“Bringing up one or two isolated incidents to assess the overall law-and-order situation is not appropriate,” Salahuddin said, adding that the government’s efforts to ensure public safety and maintain peace in society would continue.
