Pakistan has carried out fresh airstrikes in Afghanistan’s Helmand and Kunar provinces, with the Pakistani Information Ministry claiming that 22 armed fighters were killed in separate attacks targeting suspected militant hideouts.

The Pakistani Information Ministry disclosed the information on Thursday (October 1) morning.

Earlier on Wednesday night, Afghanistan’s Taliban government said nine people, including women and children, were killed and 11 others injured in Pakistani airstrikes in Helmand and Kunar.

Taliban government spokesperson Zabiullah Mujahid said the strikes were carried out late Wednesday night. In a post on X, he said three houses were destroyed in the Pakistani airstrikes in Helmand and Kunar. Condemning the attacks, he described them as crimes in violation of international law.

Although there had been no major escalation between Afghanistan and Pakistan over the past three months, tensions have deteriorated over the last two weeks. Following attacks by armed groups at several locations, including a mosque, Pakistan has increasingly blamed the Taliban government for the incidents.

Islamabad alleges that armed groups sheltered and supported by the Taliban are using Afghan territory to launch attacks inside Pakistan. The Taliban government has repeatedly denied the allegations.

Tensions between the two countries intensified further following the mosque attack. Pakistan has since carried out direct airstrikes on Afghan territory on at least two occasions.
