RIYADH, October 13: Multiple powerful explosions rocked Saudi Arabia’s capital, Riyadh, on Monday night following an emergency warning to residents about a potential aerial threat.
Residents reported hearing several loud blasts shortly after receiving text messages urging them to remain calm and stay indoors or in a safe place away from windows and doors.
Saudi-led coalition spokesperson Turki al-Maliki said air defence systems had intercepted and destroyed a ballistic missile launched towards Riyadh, according to reports.
Yemen’s Houthi group claimed responsibility for targeting Riyadh’s King Khalid International Airport with a ballistic missile.
The group also said it had targeted a military base in Khamis Mushait with a drone.
The latest incident comes amid a series of attacks on Saudi Arabia, including strikes on Riyadh’s airport that have caused casualties and disrupted air travel.
Saudi authorities have extended the suspension of operations at Riyadh’s international airport until October 17 as security concerns mount.
Authorities have urged residents to follow official safety instructions and remain in secure locations until the threat has passed.
