Iranian media have published a set of emergency guidelines advising citizens on how to protect themselves in the event of a nuclear attack.

The instructions focus on immediate safety measures following a nuclear explosion, including taking shelter, avoiding exposure to radioactive contamination and remaining indoors until authorities declare it safe to leave.

The guidelines advise people not to look directly at the intense flash produced by an explosion. Those caught outdoors and unable to enter a building immediately should take cover behind a barrier, lie flat on the ground and protect their heads and faces.

Once the blast wave has passed, people should enter the nearest building without stopping to watch the scene or take photographs. They are also advised not to seek shelter inside vehicles.

Inside a building, people should move to the basement or an interior room, staying away from windows and exterior walls. Doors and windows should be closed, while air conditioning and ventilation systems that draw air from outside should be switched off.

The instructions also outline steps to reduce the risk of radioactive contamination. People who may have been exposed should carefully remove their outer clothing without shaking it and place the garments in a tightly sealed bag, away from other people. They should not go outside to dispose of the contaminated clothing.

People are advised to shower with lukewarm water and soap, using ordinary shampoo but avoiding hair conditioners. If showering is not possible, they should clean their faces, hands and other exposed parts of the body with water or wet wipes.

The guidelines recommend relying on bottled water and packaged food and preparing to remain inside a shelter for at least 24 hours.

However, people should not assume that the danger has passed after 24 hours. They should follow official announcements and emergency instructions before leaving their shelters.

In cases where a fire breaks out inside a building or the structure is at risk of collapse, people are advised to move to a safer shelter.

The instructions also urge families to review emergency procedures together in advance to improve preparedness and reduce potential risks.
