The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has found around Tk36 crore in assets allegedly inconsistent with known sources of income in the names of banned Awami League presidium member and former lawmaker Sheikh Fazlul Karim Selim and his family members.
The ACC has decided to file a case against Sheikh Selim and issue notices to his wife and three children requiring them to submit statements of their assets.
According to ACC investigation documents, assets worth Tk13.59 crore allegedly inconsistent with known sources of income were found in Sheikh Selim’s name. The commission has decided to file a case against him under Section 27(1) of the Anti-Corruption Commission Act, 2004.
The investigation also found Tk1.70 crore in assets allegedly beyond known sources of income in the name of his wife, Fatema Selim.
Assets allegedly inconsistent with known income were also found in the names of their sons Sheikh Fazle Fahim and Sheikh Fazle Naeem, amounting to Tk2.50 crore and Tk11.70 crore respectively.
The ACC also found Tk6.78 crore in allegedly unexplained assets in the name of Sheikh Selim’s daughter, Sheikh Amena Sultana Sonia.
Under the ACC’s decision, Fatema Selim, Fazle Fahim, Fazle Naeem and Amena Sultana Sonia will be asked to submit statements of their assets under Section 26(1) of the Anti-Corruption Commission Act, 2004. The move is aimed at determining whether they hold any additional assets in their own names or through others.
A three-member ACC investigation team led by Deputy Director Md Khairul Haque conducted the inquiry. Assistant Director Bilkis Akter and Deputy Assistant Director Elman Ahmad Oni were members of the team.
