Authorities seized nearly 19 kilograms of smuggled gold, valued at around Tk 45 crore, from a Biman Bangladesh Airlines aircraft at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka on Thursday morning.
The gold consignment was recovered from Biman flight BG-148, which arrived in Dhaka from Dubai via Chattogram, during a joint operation conducted by the Directorate General of Forces Intelligence (DGFI), Aviation Security (AVSEC) and Dhaka Customs House.
According to officials, the operation was launched based on intelligence information. A DGFI team searched the aircraft’s cargo hold with the assistance of AVSEC personnel and recovered 160 gold bars concealed inside the aircraft.
The seized gold weighed 18.72 kilograms in total.
Despite the major haul, no arrests were made in connection with the smuggling attempt.
Joint Commissioner of Dhaka Customs House Kamrul Islam said the estimated market value of the recovered gold is approximately Tk 45 crore.
The latest seizure comes just months after another major recovery. In March this year, authorities seized around 18 kilograms of gold from a Biman Bangladesh Airlines aircraft in a similar intelligence-led operation.
