Police have arrested David Iman, one of Chattogram’s most notorious alleged crime figures, from Jashore after weeks of investigation into a series of extortion, armed attacks and robbery cases.
The arrest was made on Wednesday by the Detective Branch (DB) of Police in the Jhumjhumpur area along the Jashore–Narail highway.
Jashore Additional Superintendent of Police (Crime) Mirazul Islam confirmed the arrest to the media around 2:00 pm.
“He was arrested from inside a vehicle in the Jhumjhumpur area. He is currently in police custody in Jashore. Further details will be disclosed later,” he said.
According to police, criminal activities in Chattogram city and the upazilas of Raozan, Hathazari and Fatikchhari have largely been linked to associates of fugitive alleged crime kingpin Sajjad Ali Khan.
Investigators claim David Iman, also known as Mobarak Hossain Iman, emerged as one of the key operatives following the arrest of another alleged criminal known as “Chhoto Sajjad.”
Police alleged that despite being linked to a series of extortion and violent crimes, David Iman had remained out of the reach of law enforcement until his arrest.
One of the most high-profile incidents attributed to him occurred on July 13, when around 30 to 35 armed men allegedly attacked the office of Digital Dot Net (DDN) on the Chandanpura–Bakalia access road in Chattogram. During the daylight attack, the assailants vandalised the office and looted Tk35 million that had been kept for salary payments.
Police said that two days before the attack, DDN owner Adil Bin Mamun allegedly received a phone call from an overseas number from a person identifying himself as David Iman.
The caller allegedly demanded Tk20 million as a one-time payment and Tk1 million in monthly extortion, threatening to seize control of the business if the demands were not met.
CCTV footage of the attack later circulated widely on social media.
Investigators also linked the group to earlier attacks targeting the residence of Smart Group Director Mujibur Rahman, where gunfire was reportedly opened despite the house being under police protection following previous extortion threats.
Earlier this week, police arrested two alleged associates of David Iman—Mohammad Asif (25) and Saidul Islam alias Arif (24)—from the Wazedia area of Chattogram’s Oxygen-Kuwaish Road.
Police recovered a foreign-made pistol and four rounds of ammunition during that operation. Asif was also wanted in another criminal case, police said.
Authorities said further legal proceedings are underway and more information is expected following interrogation.
