Authorities on Thursday seized around 18.72 kilograms of gold, valued at approximately Tk 45 crore, from a Biman Bangladesh Airlines aircraft at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka.

The gold was recovered from Biman flight BG-148, which arrived in Dhaka from Dubai via Chattogram, during a joint operation conducted by the Directorate General of Forces Intelligence (DGFI), Aviation Security (AVSEC) and Dhaka Customs House.

According to officials, the operation was launched following intelligence inputs. A DGFI team searched the aircraft’s cargo hold with the assistance of AVSEC personnel and recovered 160 gold bars concealed inside the aircraft. The recovered gold weighed 18.72 kg in total.

No one was arrested in connection with the seizure, and authorities are investigating how the gold was smuggled onto the aircraft.

Joint Commissioner of Dhaka Customs House Kamrul Islam said the estimated market value of the seized gold is around Tk 45 crore.

The latest recovery comes just months after another major seizure. In March this year, authorities recovered around 18 kg of gold from a Biman Bangladesh Airlines aircraft in a similar operation at the airport, highlighting the continued challenge of gold smuggling through the country’s main international gateway.
