Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed has said the Bangladesh government has appointed a law firm in Dubai to pursue the cancellation of bail granted to former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Benazir Ahmed.
Speaking to reporters in Rajshahi on Sunday, the minister said the government had already instructed the law firm to take the necessary legal steps to have the bail revoked.
“We appointed the law firm a few days ago specifically for this matter. It has been instructed to pursue the cancellation of Benazir Ahmed’s bail,” Salahuddin said.
The minister said he had learned about the bail while attending a programme and immediately contacted the Home Secretary, who in turn spoke with Bangladesh’s ambassador to the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
“I came to know about the matter while I was on stage. I immediately spoke to the Home Secretary, who then contacted our ambassador in the UAE,” he said.
According to the minister, Benazir Ahmed has been granted bail on the condition that he does not leave Dubai.
“I have asked officials to obtain a certified copy of the bail order so we can examine all the conditions. We have also instructed our law firm in Dubai to pursue the cancellation of the bail,” he added.
Expressing optimism, Salahuddin said he hoped the legal process would ultimately lead to the cancellation of Benazir Ahmed’s bail.
