Three members of the same family, including two women, suffered burn injuries after a suspected abandoned explosive device detonated near their home in Bakerganj upazila of Barishal on Monday morning.
The incident occurred around 8:00 a.m. at the residence of Shah Alam Hawlader in Dudhalmou village under Bharpasha Union.
The injured were identified as Shah Alam’s wife Hanufa Begum (55), daughter Iti (18), and grandson Fahim (15). They were initially taken to Bakerganj Upazila Health Complex before being transferred to Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital in Barishal for advanced treatment.
According to Shah Alam’s son, Jamal, the explosion occurred inside a sack of sand kept beside their house. The blast set the victims’ clothes on fire, forcing them to jump into the nearby Tulatala River to save their lives. By then, their clothing had been completely burned.
Family members said they had no idea how the suspected explosive ended up inside the sandbag.
Confirming the incident, Bakerganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge Adil Hossain said an investigation is underway.
“We are treating the matter seriously. The investigation will determine what type of explosive was involved and who may be responsible,” the police official said.
