A third-grade schoolgirl was allegedly lured to a neighbour’s house with the promise of a snack, strangled to death, and her body hidden inside a wardrobe drawer in Satkhira’s Kaliganj upazila on Monday. The suspect was later beaten to death by an angry mob after the killing came to light.
The incident took place in Kashibati village under Nalta union. Police said additional personnel were deployed to bring the situation under control after enraged residents vandalised and set fire to the suspect’s house.
The victim, Farzana Yasmin, was the daughter of van driver Enamul Haque and a third-grade student at Kashibati Government Primary School.
The woman killed by the mob was identified as Suraiya Akter (Sumi), wife of Amirul Islam of the same village. She operated a snack stall selling jhalmuri outside the school.
According to local sources and CCTV footage from the school, Farzana arrived at school around 8:30 am, when Suraiya allegedly called her to her nearby house. Police said the child was allegedly tied up, robbed of her gold earrings and then strangled. Her body was later concealed inside a wardrobe drawer.
When Farzana failed to return home after classes, her family began searching for her and made public announcements in the area. CCTV footage reportedly showed Suraiya taking the girl away from the school premises, prompting family members to alert police.
Police later searched Suraiya’s house and recovered the girl’s body from the drawer.
As news of the killing spread, hundreds of angry residents surrounded the house. According to police, the crowd dragged Suraiya out, beat her to death and then vandalised and set fire to her home. Due to the volatile situation, police were initially unable to recover her body. Additional police later brought the situation under control and recovered both bodies.
Nazmunnahar, head teacher of Kashibati Government Primary School, said CCTV footage confirmed that Suraiya had taken the child from the school premises shortly after she arrived.
Kaliganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge Robiul Islam said preliminary findings suggested the child was murdered for her gold earrings.
He said both bodies would be sent for autopsy and that additional police had been deployed in the area to maintain law and order. The incident remains under investigation.
