Two rounds of gunfire were fired at the main gate of a residential building in Hamzarbagh area of the city’s Panchlaish on Monday night.
The incident came days after the expatriate son of the building owner was allegedly demanded Tk 5 million in extortion. The incident took place at around 10:30pm on Monday (August 10) at the main gate of Runa Tower in Hamzarbagh.
According to police and local sources, two young men went to the building at night and spoke to the security guard. As they were leaving, they fired two rounds at the gate and fled. No one was injured in the incident.
Chattogram Metropolitan Police Deputy Commissioner (North) Hasan Mostafa Swapan said police were informed that two rounds had been fired at the gate of Runa Tower around 10:30pm.
Two young men were initially identified as being involved in the incident. The building owner, Haji Yunus, has two sons who live in the Middle East. His elder son recently returned to the country.
The police official said the son had received a voice message from an internet-based number several days ago demanding Tk 5 million in extortion. On the night of the incident, the two men went to the building and spoke to the security guard before firing two rounds at the gate while leaving, he said. “The incident is being investigated seriously.
We are looking into who carried out the attack and why,” Swapan said. Earlier, on July 13, an office of internet service provider DDN in the Bakalia Exroad area of the city was attacked and vandalised, followed by the looting of Tk 3 million.
