A pressure cooker wrapped in black scotch tape found at a mosque field in Sadhapur area of Savar was identified by police as a powerful bomb and later defused by the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Bomb Disposal Unit.
The unit arrived at the scene and evacuated the area before carrying out the operation. A loud explosion was heard from a distance, while white smoke was seen rising into the sky.
The area was shaken by a loud bang when the bomb was defused at around 3:30pm on Wednesday (August 12), triggering panic among local residents, including those living and working about 500 metres from the site.
Nibir Hossain, a local businessman who was around 500 metres away, said, “We did not know the bomb was so powerful. When it was defused, the loud bang shook the area. We became frightened.”
Sub-Inspector (SI) Imran Hossain, in charge of the Bhabanipur Police Camp in Savar, said the DMP Bomb Disposal Unit arrived at the scene at around 1:45pm and defused the bomb at approximately 3:28pm.
Savar Police Station Inspector (Investigation) Nur Mohammad said, “The area shook with a loud bang when the bomb was defused. It was a very powerful bomb. Senior officials will brief the media in detail.”
At around 1:30am on Tuesday night, local residents spotted a blue plastic drum at the field of Laltek Ghora Mosque in Sadhapur Goper Bari. Inside the drum was a pressure cooker wrapped in black Scotch tape. The locals later removed the pressure cooker from the drum, placed it on the mosque field and informed police.
SI Imran said police went to the scene at around 8am after receiving the information and found the pressure cooker wrapped in black Scotch tape. The Bomb Disposal Unit was subsequently notified.
According to police, citing several local residents, three unidentified people left the plastic drum at the mosque field during the night. Their identities were not immediately known.
The Bomb Disposal Unit arrived shortly before 2pm and ordered the evacuation of the entire area. The bomb was then defused after necessary security measures were put in place.
