The University of Dhaka (DU) administration has formed a three-member committee to investigate allegations against 58 teachers accused of involvement in secret anti-state activities.
The committee will verify the allegations, determine the necessary course of action and make recommendations to the university authorities.
The university’s Public Relations Office disclosed the information in a statement issued on Thursday.
Professor Dr Abdus Salam, Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Education), has been appointed convener of the committee, while Dr Md Mofazzal Hossain, Dean of the Faculty of Science, and Dr Mohammad Ikramul Haque, Dean of the Faculty of Law, have been named members.
The committee has already begun its work, the university said.
Recently, several media reports claimed that 404 teachers from 22 universities across the country were involved in secret activities aimed at bringing fugitive convict Sheikh Hasina back to Bangladesh and reviving a political party whose activities have been banned.
The reports reportedly identified 92 DU teachers among those allegedly involved. Of them, the names of 58 teachers have so far been identified.
The university administration said the committee would examine the allegations against the 58 identified teachers. If the investigation uncovers evidence of involvement by additional teachers, they will also be brought under the scope of the probe.
Earlier, the DU administration had taken disciplinary action against several teachers accused of taking a stance against students during the July-August mass uprising and supporting the then ruling system. Some teachers were removed from their positions or dismissed, while several others have faced boycotts in different university departments.
The newly formed committee will verify the allegations and submit necessary recommendations to the university administration regarding the teachers concerned.
