Dhaka: Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) have arrested 53 activists, including women, affiliated with the banned Awami League and its associate organizations during a secret meeting in Bashundhara Residential Area in the capital.
The arrests were made at around 9:05pm on Thursday from a second-floor apartment in a building on Road 28, Block M, in Bashundhara Residential Area under Vatara Police Station.
The officer-in-charge (OC) of Vatara Police Station said the activists were holding a secret meeting at Flat B-2 on the second floor of KZM Heights, House No. 2173, to prepare for observing August 15 as a mourning day. Those arrested were affiliated with the banned Chhatra League, Jubo League, Jubo Mohila League and other associate organizations of the Awami League.
Police said banners and placards carrying various slogans deemed anti-state were seized from the scene. The arrested individuals will be produced before a court on Friday.
Niaz Mehedi, additional deputy commissioner (media) of DMP, confirmed the arrests, saying activists of the banned organizations had gathered to prepare for an August 15 mourning-day event and a flash procession. He said they were carrying banners and placards and chanting various anti-state slogans when police conducted the raid.
“Legal action against the arrested individuals is under process,” he said, adding that relevant DMP units are continuing regular surveillance and operations to maintain law and order and ensure public safety.
