A woman died after allegedly being tortured by her husband over dowry in Kalai, Joypurhat. The victim, Masuda Begum, died at Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital in Bogura on Friday night after undergoing treatment for seven days.
Her brother filed a murder case against her husband, Mehedi Hasan, following her death.
Police arrested Mehedi at his home on Friday night and sent him to jail through a court on Saturday afternoon.
According to the case statement, Mehedi allegedly demanded dowry from Masuda and subjected her to physical and mental abuse.
On August 14, he allegedly tied her hands and feet, played loud music inside the house and struck her in the face with pliers, breaking two of her teeth. He then allegedly heated a sickle and burned her hands and feet.
The statement further alleged that Masuda became critically ill and was locked inside the house. Local residents later rescued her and admitted her to Joypurhat General Hospital. She was subsequently transferred to Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital in Bogura for better treatment, where she died after seven days.
Masuda’s brother Bashir Mondal said his sister had been tortured and killed and demanded justice.
Dipendra Nath Singh, investigation officer of Kalai Police Station, confirmed the death, filing of the case and arrest of the accused. Mehedi was later sent to jail through a court.
