Security has been tightened in Dhaka’s diplomatic zone following email threats sent to two foreign embassies, law enforcement officials said.
Embassies in Baridhara and Gulshan have been placed under heightened surveillance, with additional uniformed and plainclothes security personnel deployed in the areas.
Abu Khayer Rabbi, additional deputy commissioner of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s (DMP) Diplomatic Security Division, confirmed the matter to Sara Bangla.
He said the Chinese and Russian embassies had received threats via email.
However, authorities have not been able to determine the location from which the threatening emails were sent. Police suspect the messages could be a scam or fake threats.
Abu Khayer said the embassies had not directly informed police about the threats. They may have notified the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which subsequently informed the Police Headquarters and the Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) unit.
Following the reports, law enforcement agencies increased surveillance around the embassies. However, police do not currently consider the situation a major security threat.
“After learning about the matter, we further strengthened the security measures that were already in place,” Abu Khayer said.
He also said no general diary (GD) or written complaint had been filed with any police station in connection with the incident so far.
