A leader of now banned Juba League (JL), the youth wing of also banned Awami League, Al Amin, 40, has been hacked to death by unidentified assailants in Bhairab, Kishoreganj. The attack took place around midnight on Sunday in the Tinpatti area of the municipal town. He was later taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared him dead at around 3am.
Al Amin was the general secretary of the Bhairab municipal unit of Jubo League. He was also a former councillor of Ward No. 1 of Bhairab Municipality and a former director of the Bhairab Chamber of Commerce and Industries. He was involved in the fertiliser business and owned a residential hotel called Riverview in Bhairab Bazar.
Family members said Al Amin was the son of Jasim Uddin of Araibep [locality] in the municipal area. He had been actively involved in Jubo League politics. Following the political changeover on August 5, 2024, several cases were filed against him. He was arrested twice and spent time in jail, but was currently out on bail. After the political changeover, he had largely stayed out of public view.
For several years, Al Amin had not lived at his ancestral home. He rented a house in the Ranibazar area, where he lived with his wife and children.
At around 11:30pm on Sunday, Al Amin was at his business establishment, Riverview Hotel. At approximately 11:50pm, he left the hotel on his motorcycle for home. After entering the road leading to his residence and travelling a short distance, a group of assailants surrounded him and attacked him with sharp weapons.
Al Amin sustained multiple injuries to his head, and one of his leg tendons was severed. He suffered heavy blood loss. Local residents rescued him and initially took him to a private hospital. He was later referred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead at around 3am after his arrival.
locals said the road leading to Al Amin’s residence was relatively deserted at night. They said they came out after hearing screams and saw several people fleeing the scene. Al Amin was found lying on the road covered in blood. His head and face were so badly bloodied that he could not initially be identified.
Bhairab Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md Mahabur Rahman confirmed the incident.
