A fire broke out at a jhut (garment waste) warehouse in Gazipur early Thursday, spreading to several nearby warehouses in the area.
The fire originated at a poly warehouse owned by a man named Bacchu Mia in the Dewalia Bari area under Konabari Metro Police Station at around 5:30am, according to local residents. It quickly spread to adjoining warehouses.
Firefighters were alerted after the blaze broke out and five units of the Fire Service and Civil Defence were deployed to bring the fire under control.
At least 12 jhut warehouses were reportedly burned in the incident. Warehouse owners claimed that the fire caused losses of nearly Tk 500 million.
The cause of the fire and the exact extent of the damage could not immediately be confirmed. Further details are expected after an assessment by the authorities.
