Police have arrested three alleged members of a snatching gang after they allegedly robbed a man of Tk 3.9 million in Dhaka’s Dhanmondi area while he was returning with money withdrawn from a bank.
The arrests were made following a joint effort by the victim, local residents and police, according to the National Emergency Service 999.
Police Inspector Anwar Sattar, media and public relations officer of the National Emergency Service 999, confirmed the matter on Monday afternoon.
He said a caller contacted the 999 service from the Dhanmondi Lake area on Sunday (30 August), reporting that three snatchers riding a motorcycle had intercepted a man carrying Tk 3.9 million in cash after he had withdrawn the money from a bank.
The suspects allegedly snatched the victim’s bag containing the money and fled on the motorcycle.
The victim then chased the snatchers. At one point, one of the suspects fell off the motorcycle onto the road, allowing local residents to catch him. He was allegedly carrying a pistol at the time.
After receiving the emergency call, the 999 service immediately informed Dhanmondi Police Station and requested necessary action.
A team from Dhanmondi Police Station rushed to the scene and arrested the suspect, identified as Tanvir Abedin Jewel, 41, along with a pistol.
Police subsequently launched a joint operation involving several teams from Dhanmondi Police Station and the Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police.
The operation led to the arrest of two more alleged members of the same snatching gang on Monday, Anwar Sattar said.
Police are investigating the incident and the suspects’ possible involvement in other similar crimes in the capital.
The arrests came as law enforcement agencies have been stepping up efforts to curb snatching and other street crimes in Dhaka, particularly incidents involving people carrying large amounts of cash after withdrawing money from banks.
