Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) has seized 294,000 yaba tablets in separate anti-smuggling drives in Cox’s Bazar and arrested two alleged drug traffickers.
BGB members also seized a tourist vehicle and a boat allegedly used in drug smuggling during the operations.
A BGB patrol team arrested Md Imran, 34, in Ukhiya’s Palongkhali area at around 2:20am on Friday while he was allegedly entering Bangladesh from Myanmar disguised as a fisherman.
Some 50,000 yaba tablets were recovered from a fish basket he was carrying, according to BGB.
Earlier, at around 10:40pm on Thursday, BGB personnel recovered 200,000 yaba tablets from two packages abandoned near Kharangkhalia after two people allegedly crossed into Bangladesh from Myanmar and fled.
In another operation at around 5:30pm on Thursday, BGB recovered 40,000 yaba tablets from a boat in East Karengaghona that was allegedly being used to smuggle drugs from Myanmar.
The suspected smuggler fled the scene by swimming back towards Myanmar, BGB said.
Meanwhile, BGB members, assisted by a narcotics detection dog named Henry, recovered another 4,000 yaba tablets concealed near the steering wheel of a tourist vehicle at the Shilkhali checkpoint.
The driver, Md Omar Faruk, 19, was arrested and the vehicle seized.
Lt Col Md Zahirul Islam, commander of the BGB’s Ukhiya Battalion, said intelligence surveillance and anti-smuggling operations along the border had been intensified.
He said the operations would continue to prevent the trafficking of yaba and other illegal goods across the Bangladesh-Myanmar border.
