A sub-inspector of the Special Branch (SB) of Bangladesh Police was beaten to death in the Aminbazar area of Savar, Dhaka, on Saturday night.
The deceased was identified as Altaf Hossain, 58, an SB sub-inspector. His younger son, Ariful Islam, 26, was also seriously injured in the attack.
According to police and eyewitnesses, the incident occurred around 8:00pm on September 5 in the Borodeshi area of Aminbazar.
Altaf and his son reportedly became involved in an altercation involving the parking of a private car. A group of around 10 to 15 people allegedly attacked them.
Altaf was taken to Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College and Hospital at around 9:30pm, where doctors declared him dead on arrival.
Dhaka District Superintendent of Police Shameema Parvin said Altaf was attacked near his home while trying to resolve a dispute over the parking of a car.
Police are working to identify and arrest those involved in the killing, she said.
Altaf lived with his family in the Borodeshi area of Aminbazar and served with the Special Branch in Dhaka.
The exact circumstances and motive behind the attack are still under investigation.
