A member of the police Special Branch (SB) was beaten to death while trying to settle a dispute over car parking in Aminbazar of Savar, on the outskirts of Dhaka. Police have arrested one suspect and identified others allegedly involved in the killing.
The deceased, Altaf Hossain, 58, was a sub-inspector of the SB and was posted in the Malibagh zone of Dhaka. He lived with his family in the Boro Deshi Madina City area of Aminbazar, Savar.
Savar Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge Saiful Islam confirmed the arrest at a press briefing on Sunday (September 6). He said a case had been filed in connection with the incident and one accused, identified as Zahirul, had been arrested.
The incident took place around 8pm on Saturday in the Boro Deshi area of Aminbazar. Altaf and his younger son, Ariful Islam, 26, were reportedly involved in an altercation with a group of 10 to 15 people over the parking of a private car in front of a T-shirt factory in the Madina Housing area.
At one stage, the group allegedly attacked Altaf and his son. They were taken to Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital in Dhaka at around 9:30pm, where doctors declared Altaf dead.
Police said they immediately launched a raid in the area after receiving information about the attack. The main accused was subsequently arrested.
“Based on the accused’s confession, CCTV footage and other investigations, we have identified the others involved. Efforts are underway to arrest them,” said OC Saiful Islam.
SB Assistant Sub-Inspector Masud Rana said Altaf was an SB sub-inspector, although he was not posted in the Savar zone.
Dhaka District Police Superintendent Shamima Parveen said the incident stemmed from a trivial dispute over the parking of a private car near Altaf’s residence.
She said Altaf and his son were attacked when the police officer intervened in an attempt to settle the dispute between the two sides.
