Satkhira-4 lawmaker Gazi Nazrul Islam and his first wife have been taken into police custody for questioning following the recovery of the hanging body of his second wife, 19-year-old Mosa. Moriam Khatun, from a flat at NAM Bhaban in Dhaka’s Sher-e-Bangla Nagar.
Tejgaon Division Deputy Commissioner of Police Ibne Mizan confirmed the matter at around 10pm on Sunday (September 20).
Police said Moriam’s body was found hanging from a ceiling fan in a room of Flat 203 on the third floor of Building 5 at NAM Bhaban, the residential complex for lawmakers.
Police and forensic teams collected evidence from the scene.
The body was sent to Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital morgue for autopsy after preparation of the inquest report.
Police have not yet determined whether Moriam died by suicide or was killed. Investigators said the actual cause of death would be established after further investigation and the autopsy.
According to police sources, Gazi Nazrul had lunch with both of his wives on Sunday before they went to separate rooms in the afternoon.
Later, Moriam’s room was found locked from inside. She was subsequently seen hanging inside the room through a window.
Gazi Nazrul, a three-time lawmaker from Satkhira-4, was taken to Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station for questioning.
His first wife was also taken into police custody in connection with the incident.
