A 24-year-old man allegedly hacked his mother and sister-in-law to death and killed his eight-month-old niece by slamming her to the ground in Debidwar, Cumilla, on Monday morning.
The incident occurred around 8:30am at the house of Mostafa Master in the South Para area of Barashalghar village.
The accused, identified as Emon, son of the late Farid Mia, was caught by local residents shortly after the incident and locked inside a room.
According to locals, Emon allegedly attacked his mother, Peyara Begum, with a machete, killing her on the spot. He then allegedly slammed his eight-month-old niece to the ground, killing her.
When his sister-in-law, Rabeya Begum, tried to intervene, Emon allegedly attacked her repeatedly, leaving her critically injured. She died on the way to hospital.
Confirming the incident, Debidwar police station Officer-in-Charge Md Moniruzzaman said police were heading to the scene after receiving the report.
He said Emon had reportedly been suffering from an illness for a long time, but the exact motive behind the killings had not yet been established.
Police said details would become clear after an investigation at the scene.
