CUMILA: Police detained 624 people for questioning during a coordinated anti-teen gang operation across Cumilla district on Wednesday night.
The operation began after evening prayers and continued until around 1:30am, with police from all 18 police stations participating. Several of those detained were students from different educational institutions.
Cumilla District Police Media Officer and Additional Superintendent of Police Lutfur Rahman confirmed the operation, saying it was conducted on the instructions of Police Superintendent Anisuzzaman following reports of increasing involvement of teenagers in criminal activities.
Police carried out raids in areas where reports of youth gangs and harassment had been received. Authorities said the backgrounds of those detained would be checked, including whether they had any previous involvement in criminal activities, before taking further legal action.
Police said 75 people were detained by Cumilla Kotwali Model Police Station, 46 by Sadar Dakshin Model Police Station, 50 by Burichang Police Station, 41 by Manoharganj Police Station, 59 by Daudkandi Police Station and 35 by Laksham Police Station. Information from the remaining police stations was still being verified.
Cumilla Kotwali Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge Touhidul Anwar said police were also identifying which detainees were students. Those found to be involved in criminal activities would be sent to court, while others could be warned and released into the custody of their families.
Meanwhile, parents gathered outside several police stations after learning that teenagers had been detained. Some remained outside the stations until late at night, seeking information about their children.
Several detainees were picked up from the city’s Eidgah field, including a Class 10 student from a well-known local school. His mother reportedly went to the police station after learning of his detention.
