Three people were detained with around 397.7 grams, or 36 tolas, of gold jewellery at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka on Thursday, the Airport Armed Police Battalion (APBn) said.
The detainees were identified as Rabia Begum, 48, Akash Ahmed, 35, and Md Jalil, 46.
According to APBn, the three were moving suspiciously on the ground floor of the airport’s multi-storey car park at around 2:50pm.
When they noticed the presence of police, they allegedly attempted to flee but were detained.
A search of their belongings recovered 397.7 grams of 22-carat gold jewellery, eight mobile phones and three laptops, police said.
During preliminary questioning, the detainees reportedly said the gold, mobile phones and laptops had been brought into Bangladesh from different countries through unidentified passengers for smuggling purposes.
APBn said the three had allegedly been involved in gold smuggling at the airport for a long time.
A case was filed against them with Airport Police Station under the Special Powers Act, 1974, according to the police.
