The investigation officer in the murder case of seventh-grader Ishayat Shahriar Opritom in Cumilla has been changed, with Inspector (Investigation) Rajib Ahmed of Sadar South Model Police Station taking charge of the case.
The change was confirmed by Cumilla Additional Superintendent of Police Md Lutfur Rahman on Friday night. Previously, the case was being investigated by Sub-Inspector Saiful Islam.
Police said the investigation officer was changed considering the importance of the case, and an inspector was deemed more appropriate to lead the investigation.
Rajib Ahmed said he had been informed of the change through an order from the police superintendent’s office.
He said he would begin the investigation after receiving the case documents and would try to complete the investigation quickly and submit the charge sheet to the court.
Opritom, the only child of Cumilla University Bengali Department Associate Professor Dr Nahida Begum, went missing on September 18 after leaving home in the Kotbari area with an iPhone to take photographs.
His body was recovered the following day from a forested area in Sananda of the Lalmai hills near Cumilla University.
Police have arrested four people in connection with the murder.
Three of them have reportedly given confessional statements before a court.
Police said Opritom was allegedly killed when he resisted an attempt to take his iPhone.
