Customs intelligence officials have seized 81.50 litres of foreign liquor, valued at around Tk16.30 lakh, from two passengers at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport.

The Customs Intelligence and Investigation Directorate (CIID) conducted the operations based on confidential information, the National Board of Revenue (NBR) said in a press release on Wednesday.

In the first operation, officials scanned the baggage of Roman Mikhailov, a passenger arriving from Dubai on Emirates flight EK0584, as he passed through the green channel. They recovered 78.50 litres of liquor of various brands from his baggage.

As he was travelling on a foreign passport, he was entitled to bring one litre of liquor duty-free under the applicable baggage rules. Customs officials therefore seized the remaining 77.50 litres.

In a separate operation late Tuesday night, officials intercepted another passenger, Samiul Islam, arriving in Dhaka on Turkish Airlines flight TK0712. A baggage scan found four litres of foreign liquor, which was also seized.

After excluding the one-litre duty-free allowance applicable to each passenger, customs officials seized a total of 81.50 litres of liquor in the two cases, with an estimated market value of Tk16.30 lakh.

The customs authorities said such operations would continue at the airport’s green channel and other vulnerable points, using intelligence, passenger profiling and close surveillance to prevent smuggling and misuse of baggage facilities.
