A business owner in Bagerhat has been jailed after Detective Branch (DB) police seized 2,042 gas cylinders, including expired ones, during a raid in Chitalmari upazila on Tuesday night.

The cylinders were seized from M/s Roha Enterprise at the Chitalmari upazila parishad intersection on September 29.

Following the raid, a mobile court sentenced the proprietor, Riyad Munshi, to two months in jail and fined him Tk10,000 for allegedly storing expired cylinders and exceeding the permitted stock limit.

Chitalmari Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Khadija Akter, who conducted the mobile court, passed the order.

“The seized cylinders are estimated to be worth Tk21.81 lakh. They have been taken to Chitalmari Police Station and will remain there until further legal action,” she said.

According to the UNO, the business had a licence to stock a maximum of 40 gas cylinders.

However, officials found 2,042 cylinders on the premises, including 174 filled and 1,868 empty cylinders. The proprietor could not provide a satisfactory explanation for the unusually large stock, she said.

Many of the seized cylinders had also passed their expiry dates in 2022 and 2024, Khadija added.
