Police have recovered a stolen church bell belonging to St Christina Catholic Church in the Asad Avenue area of Mohammadpur in the capital.

The 70-kilogramme brass bell was found abandoned and wrapped up in the Zakir Hossain Road area late Thursday night.

Mohammadpur Police Station Officer-in-Charge Abdul Halim confirmed the recovery, adding that efforts were underway to arrest those involved.

The bell was stolen from St Christina Catholic Church on Asad Avenue on Thursday (October 1).

Earlier, the OC said the theft likely took place sometime between midnight on Wednesday and dawn on Thursday.

After being informed of the theft, police and Detective Branch members visited the church and began an investigation. The Criminal Investigation Department’s crime scene unit also collected evidence from the spot.

Police said a review of the church’s CCTV footage showed that the cameras had stopped recording after midnight. Investigators suspect the cameras may have been deliberately switched off as part of a pre-planned theft.

Father Kajol Purification, parish priest of St Christina Church, said he found the church’s small gate half-open and its lock broken when he went there around 5:30am on Thursday.

“Looking up, I saw that the historic bell on the second floor of the church was missing,” he said, adding that the CCTV footage also showed that recording had stopped during the night.
