Dhaka Customs House officials have detained two people, including an employee of Biman Bangladesh Airlines, after recovering gold worth around Tk2 crore from Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka.
The Airport Unit of Dhaka Customs House conducted the operation with assistance from the airport’s Aviation Security (AVSEC) personnel and in the presence of representatives from other intelligence agencies.
The National Board of Revenue (NBR) disclosed the information in a press release on Friday.
The detained Biman employee was identified as Obaidur Rahman, while the other detainee is a passenger whose identity was not disclosed.
According to the NBR, officials of the Airport Unit searched Obaidur’s body around 11:20pm on Thursday with the assistance of AVSEC personnel. Nine gold bars wrapped in tissue paper were recovered from his shirt pocket and waist belt.
The recovered gold weighed 1.005 kilogrammes.
Based on information provided by Obaidur, customs officials later detained a passenger allegedly linked to the incident.
Representatives of various intelligence agencies were present during the search operation, the NBR said.
Legal proceedings are being initiated against those involved in connection with the seizure, along with the recovered gold, it added.
