DHAKA: Dhaka Customs House has seized 4.5 kilograms of gold bars from a Malaysia Airlines passenger at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport. The seized gold is estimated to be worth around Tk 8 crore.

The gold bars were recovered at around 1:45am on Saturday (October 3) after being specially concealed on the passenger’s body.

Authorities are preparing to file a criminal case against the passenger, identified as 43-year-old Malaysian national Yang Don Siu.

According to customs officials, the passenger was placed under surveillance based on intelligence information. After Malaysia Airlines flight MH196 arrived in Dhaka from Kuala Lumpur, Yang Don Siu was kept under observation as a suspected passenger.

When passengers collected their baggage and proceeded through Green Channel-1, customs officials separated and searched him. In the presence of intelligence officials, the concealed gold bars were recovered from his body.

Customs officials said the shipment consisted of nine 24-carat gold bars—four weighing one kilogram each and five weighing 100 grams each. The bars had been wrapped in a black cloth belt and concealed under the passenger’s shirt.

The passenger had not declared the gold and could not produce any documents or other evidence proving its legality.

The gold has been temporarily detained under Section 191 of the Customs Act, 2023, for legal proceedings. Authorities are also preparing to file a criminal case against the passenger with Airport Police Station under the relevant provisions of the law.
