A Dhaka court has sent Major (retd) Akhtaruzzaman to jail after rejecting his bail petition in a case filed over creating disorder at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport, obstructing government work and allegedly assaulting a security official on duty.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Jamshed Alam passed the order after a hearing on Sunday.

Akhtaruzzaman was produced before the court after completing a one-day remand. Investigation Officer Sub-Inspector Majedul Islam of Airport Police Station sought his detention in jail until the investigation is completed.

In his petition, the investigation officer said Akhtaruzzaman had been questioned during the one-day remand and provided information about the incident, which was being verified. As the investigation was still underway, the officer sought his detention until its completion.

Several lawyers, including Advocate Abdur Razzaq, sought bail for Akhtaruzzaman. Metropolitan Public Prosecutor Omar Faruk Faruqi opposed the bail petition on behalf of the state. After hearing both sides, the court rejected the bail plea and ordered that he be sent to jail.

Two separate petitions were also filed on Akhtaruzzaman’s behalf seeking arrangements for better medical treatment at his own expense and division facilities in jail. After hearing the petitions, the court directed the authorities to take necessary measures in accordance with jail rules.

Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s Detective Branch arrested Akhtaruzzaman from his residence in the Dhaka Cantonment area on the evening of October 2. The following day, a court granted police one day’s remand to question him.

According to the case statement, an agitated situation developed at the airport on October 1 after passengers arriving from Medina, Saudi Arabia, on Biman Bangladesh Airlines flight BG-338 faced delays in receiving their luggage.

Airport Executive Director Group Captain SM Ragib Samad went to the scene to control the situation, according to the case statement.

It alleged that Akhtaruzzaman verbally abused him, pushed him out and threatened to assault him. He was also accused of making indecent remarks about the aviation minister.

The case was filed on allegations of obstructing government work, creating disorder at the airport and assaulting an official while he was performing his duties.

Akhtaruzzaman had long been involved in BNP politics. However, he reportedly joined Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami ahead of the 13th parliamentary election in 2026. BNP expelled him from the party for the fifth time in 2022.
