Police ASI’s ‘I took bribes to buy my uniform’ remark goes viral

A video showing a police assistant sub-inspector (ASI) in Habiganj allegedly making a controversial remark about bribery has gone viral on social media.

The ASI, identified as Mohammad Ilias Hossain of Chunarughat Police Station, is heard saying in the video, “I bought my uniform with bribe money, to take bribes.”

The remark was reportedly made recently while Ilias was investigating a case at Ranigaon Bazar in Chunarughat upazila.

A local resident recorded the statement on a mobile phone, and the video later spread on social media, triggering criticism.

According to local sources, Ilias had gone to the market to investigate a case filed by businessman Noman Mia. He reportedly made the remarks in the presence of people there.

Several locals have also alleged that the ASI has demanded bribes during investigations into various cases and showed little interest in investigations without receiving money. However, these allegations could not be independently verified.

Contacted about the viral video, Ilias said he knew nothing about the matter before disconnecting the call.

Chunarughat Police Station Officer-in-Charge Saiful Islam said he had seen the video and that the matter was being verified.

He said he would speak to Ilias to determine the context in which the remarks were made.
