The Special Rapid Battalion (SRB) has arrested Tahura Banu Lipi, 45, allegedly the mastermind of a gang involved in the abduction of six-year-old Bayzid from Dhaka’s Rupnagar area.
A joint team of SRB-4 and SRB-1 arrested Lipi during a raid on a house in Kha-para under Tongi West Police Station in Gazipur on the night of October 6.
According to the case statement and preliminary interrogation of the arrested suspect, Bayzid was abducted from his home in the Duaripara area of Rupnagar on September 18.
The incident drew widespread attention after it was reported in the media and circulated on social media.
Following the abduction, an SRB-4 team began a covert investigation to uncover the circumstances surrounding the child’s disappearance, identify and arrest those involved and rescue the victim.
SRB-4 rescued Bayzid on October 7 and handed him over to his family. Police have also arrested Kuslum, another alleged member of the abduction gang.
Investigators found that the gang had allegedly abducted the child with the intention of selling him.
During the investigation, CCTV footage showed that the child was taken to Fair Nursing Home Clinic, around 1.5 kilometres from the abduction site. Another CCTV recording allegedly showed Lipi and Nasrin taking the child by the hand.
Investigators said the suspects had attempted to sell the child to several childless couples but failed because of his age. On Lipi’s advice, Nasrin later took the child elsewhere.
SRB said Lipi and Nasrin abandoned Bayzid on a road in the Tongi area and fled after increased police and SRB activity and reports about the abduction appeared on social media.
Based on technological analysis and intelligence information, the joint SRB-4 and SRB-1 team identified Lipi’s location and arrested her in the raid in Kha-para.
Lipi has been handed over to the concerned police station for legal action.
SRB said operations were continuing to arrest other members of the gang.
