A crude bomb, locally known as a cocktail, exploded in front of the Prime Minister’s Office in Dhaka’s Tejgaon area early Saturday, prompting police to launch an investigation to identify and arrest those involved.
Two motorcycle-borne individuals allegedly threw two cocktails on Agargaon Link Road, near the Prime Minister’s Office, at around 1:15am on Saturday.
One exploded, while the other remained unexploded and was later dealt with by the Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s (DMP) Bomb Disposal Unit.
DMP Tejgaon Division Deputy Commissioner Ibn-e-Mizan confirmed the incident while speaking to reporters after visiting the scene.
According to police, the two suspects stayed at the location for two to three minutes, apparently observing the surroundings, before throwing the explosives and fleeing towards Kafrul via Agargaon.
Police have launched efforts to identify the suspects and collect CCTV footage from nearby establishments.
Investigators said it was not immediately possible to obtain all relevant footage as shops and other establishments were closed at the time.
The Bomb Disposal Unit examined the unexploded device and found no shrapnel or other harmful components.
Preliminary findings suggested that it resembled a firecracker, police said.
Authorities are treating the incident with utmost importance and are working to identify and arrest those responsible.
Police said the suspects may have used a link road to avoid security arrangements along the main road.
The investigation is underway to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident.
