A man identifying himself as an activist of Islami Andolan Bangladesh has been detained with 144 bottles of locally made liquor in the capital’s Pragati Sarani area.
The Gulshan Traffic Division detained him during a routine checkpoint operation around 9am on Sunday.
Traffic Inspector (TI) Delwar Hossain led the operation.
According to Delwar, a CNG-run auto-rickshaw was signalled to stop at the checkpoint, but one of its occupants quickly fled, raising suspicion.
Police then searched the vehicle and recovered 144 bottles of locally made liquor packed in three sacks.
Another person travelling in the auto-rickshaw was detained. During preliminary questioning, he identified himself as an activist of Islami Andolan Bangladesh, police said.
The Gulshan Traffic Division said legal proceedings against the detainee were underway and preparations were being made to file a case under the Narcotics Control Act.
