The government has strongly condemned the harassment of former interim government chief adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus at John F Kennedy International Airport in New York and directed the Bangladesh mission there to coordinate with local law enforcement agencies to identify those involved and take appropriate legal action.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said a group suspected of being affiliated with the activities of the banned Awami League appeared to have harassed the Nobel laureate while he was abroad.

The government condemned such behaviour towards a person held in high regard by the international community, the statement said.

It also expressed hope that Bangladeshis living abroad would refrain from such misconduct towards distinguished figures from their home country in the future.

The ministry instructed the Bangladesh mission in New York to contact local law enforcement agencies over the incident and take steps to identify those responsible and pursue appropriate legal action.

The statement added that such incidents had damaged the image of Bangladesh and its citizens internationally.
