Police have detained a seventh-grade student accused of assaulting a physical education teacher at BIAM Model School and College in Bogura.
The student, identified as Riyad Islam Kiron, was detained in the Charmatha area of the town around 9pm on Wednesday, October 14, police said.
According to police and school sources, the incident took place around 4:30pm on Monday, October 12, when assistant physical education teacher Abu Raihan was attacked while returning home after school, in front of the Bogura Armed Police Battalion (APBn) headquarters.
The teacher had reportedly reprimanded Riyad for excessive mischief in class and instructed him to bring his guardian to school. The student was subsequently accused of assaulting the teacher over the incident.
Raihan sustained a cut to his chin after being struck with a stick and required eight stitches. He also suffered a serious injury to his neck.
Following the assault, students staged protests on the school premises. The school authorities later expelled the accused student by issuing a compulsory transfer certificate (TC). A complaint was also filed with the police.
Bogura Sadar Police Station Officer-in-Charge Ibrahim Ali confirmed the detention to media, saying the student was apprehended during a police operation in the Charmatha area.
He added that legal proceedings in connection with the incident were underway.
