India is reviewing Bangladesh’s request for the extradition of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, Indian Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said during a media briefing in New Delhi on Friday.
Responding to a journalist’s question about whether Bangladesh had recently renewed its request to extradite Sheikh Hasina and other accused individuals, and whether there had been any communication between the two countries on the matter, Jaiswal said:
“We have received an extradition request. As we have stated earlier, the request is under examination. It will be considered in accordance with the relevant legal and judicial processes.”
The journalist also referred to reports that Sheikh Hasina had announced her intention to return to Bangladesh in December and asked whether this had prompted any discussions between New Delhi and Dhaka. Jaiswal did not comment beyond reiterating that the extradition request is being examined through the appropriate legal framework.
Another reporter asked about a separate extradition request from Bangladesh involving an individual who is currently in the custody of Indian police. According to Bangladesh’s Home Minister, all necessary documents have been sent to the Indian authorities regarding the suspect, who is accused of murdering a politician ahead of an election in Bangladesh.
In response, Jaiswal said he had no specific information about that case. He added that any extradition request is considered on the basis of applicable legal provisions and judicial procedures before a decision is made.
