The Metropolitan Union of Journalists (MUJ) has submitted a memorandum to Khulna Metropolitan Police (KMP) Commissioner Mohammad Zahidul Hasan, demanding the immediate arrest and exemplary punishment of those involved in the shooting attack on four journalists in Khulna.
The memorandum was handed over at the KMP Commissioner’s office on Sunday. After receiving it, the commissioner directed the concerned officials to take the necessary steps.
In the memorandum, MUJ urged police to identify and arrest the attackers by analyzing CCTV footage and intelligence information and to ensure exemplary punishment. The organization also called for stronger security measures to protect journalists working in Khulna Metropolitan City.
According to the memorandum, on the night of July 14, two assailants riding a motorcycle opened fire on four journalists who were sitting at a tea stall at Shantidham intersection. In the attack, The Business Standard Khulna Bureau Chief Awal Sheikh suffered injury. The attackers fled the scene immediately after the shooting.
The memorandum further stated that the failure to ensure justice in several previous killings of journalists in Khulna has emboldened criminals. MUJ therefore demanded the swift prosecution of those responsible for the latest attack, exemplary punishment for the perpetrators, and enhanced security for journalists.
